Halima started her scientific career at the University of Edinburgh where she completed a BSc (Hons) in Medical sciences in 2018. During her time in Edinburgh, Halima developed an interest in reproductive biology which led her to the lab of Professor Evelyn Telfer where she carried out her senior honours thesis. Her thesis focused on the in vitro growth and maturation of African elephant oocytes. To further explore her interests, Halima joined the MSc in Clinical Embryology course at the University of Oxford in 2018. At Oxford, Halima carried out her thesis under the supervision of Dr. Suzannah Williams. Her thesis investigated the effect of chemotherapy prior to ovarian tissue cryopreservation on follicle development in xenotransplanted tissue. Recognising the limitless research possibilities in the young field of reproductive sciences, Halima is now pursuing her interest in the field from a different direction – Meiosis! As part of the Schuh lab Halima will study the age-related decline in female fertility, with a focus on the involvement of protein complexes critical to meiosis.
