Geboren am 3. Februar 1969 in Stuttgart. Studium der Chemie an den Universitäten Stuttgart und Heidelberg mit Forschungsaufenthalten in Bristol (Großbritannien) und Cambridge (Großbritannien). Diplom in Chemie 1995 an der Universität Heidelberg, Promotion an der Universität Heidelberg/EMBL Grenoble (Frankreich) im Jahr 1998. Doktorand in Grenoble (Frankreich) von 1995 bis 1998 sowie Postdoktorand an der Stanford University (USA) von 1999-2001. Tenure track-Professor für Biochemie an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München von 2001 bis 2003, Professor für Biochemie an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München von 2004 bis 2014. Direktor des Genzentrums München der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München von 2004 bis 2013. Direktor am Max-Planck-Institut für biophysikalische Chemie seit 2014.
