U. Benjamin Kaupp

U. Benjamin Kaupp studied chemistry at the University of Tübingen and the Technical University of Berlin (TUB). He received his PhD in biophysical chemistry from TUB in 1979 and his habilitation from the University of Osnabrück. He then worked as a research associate until 1981, as a university assistant in 1982-1985, and as an assistant professor in 1985-1987 at the Department of Biophysics, University of Osnabrück. In 1987, he conducted research as a Feodor Lynen Fellow of the Humboldt Foundation at the Department of Medical Chemistry, Kyoto University, Japan. 1988-2007 he worked as Director of the Institute of Neuroscience and Biophysics at the Forschungszentrum Jülich and as Full Professor of Biophysical Chemistry at the University of Cologne. In 2008, he was appointed as Scientific Director at the Center of Advanced European Studies and Research (Caesar, now Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Neurobiology of Behavior) and Professor of Molecular Neurobiology at the University of Bonn. In 2010/2011 he was Interim Director of the former MPI for Neurological Research in Cologne (today: MPI for Metabolism Research). During the summers of 2000-2019, he conducted research as a Whitman Investigator at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), Woods Hole, US. Since 2022, he has been a senior professor at the LIMES Institute and the Clausius Institute for Physical Chemistry and Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Bonn and Emeritus Director at the MPI for Multidisciplinary Sciences, Göttingen. Since 2020, Kaupp's research is funded under the DFG's Koselleck Program.
