Study of chemistry and biology, doctorate Freiburg University (1977), German Habilitation in biology Tübingen University (1984), Full Professor in Genetics Munich University (1988), Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry (since 1991), Honorary Professor Göttingen University (1993), Vice President of the Max Planck Society (2002-2014).
