World’s fastest electron microscope films light oscillations using quantum interference

A research team from Göttingen and Barcelona (Spain) has used the quantum mechanical interference of electrons to visualize light field oscillations in a nanostructure. The experiment is based on an attosecond electron microscope developed by Claus Ropers’ group at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Multidisciplinary Sciences and the University of Göttingen, which reveals the interaction of matter and light in the nanocosmos. more

“Optical fingerprints” on an electron beam

Transmission electron microscopes in combination with short light pulses make it possible to investigate non-linear optical processes. Researchers from Göttingen and Switzerland have now shown for the first time how electrons can distinguish complex light states in a microscopic light storage in an electron microscope. more

Interplay of free electrons

October 12, 2023

Researchers have succeeded in measuring interactions between electrons in the electron microscope. In the process, they discovered an “energetic fingerprint” in which the distribution of the velocities of the electrons is very characteristic of their respective numbers. With the help of their findings, they developed a new method that can increase the performance of various electron microscopes. more

Laser pulse creates exotic order in quantum material

Researchers from the MPI for Multidisciplinary Sciences in Göttingen, in collaboration with colleagues from Kiel University, have now successfully created a state in a crystalline material that – similar to the structure of liquid crystals – can be described as neither clearly liquid nor clearly crystalline. more

Research in quadrillionths of a second

Claus Ropers’ Department of Ultrafast Dynamics applies innovative methods to investigate electronic, structural, and magnetic processes in solids, nanostructures, and on surfaces. Variety to the daily laboratory life brings the team with a wide range of ventures and creative ideas. more
